Summary
The Packers and Bears have both undergone transformations. The Packers have restructured a defense that surrendered more passing yards than any other team in NFL history. The Bears have added offensive firepower with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.
These two teams last met on Christmas Night in 2011. The Packers won 35-21. Aaron Rodgers had five touchdown passes. The Bears had approximately 36 minutes of time-of-possession. Led by Kahlil Bell, the Bears have 199 rushing yards. Josh McCown had 242 passing yards.
The Bears were ripping this defense apart with a backfield of Bell and McCown. In Week 1, the Packers struggled against a backfield of Frank Gore and Alex Smith. Despite an improved pass rush, Smith completed 20-of-26 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns. The 49ers also had 186 rushing yards.
The Bears' defense had some trouble with the Colts' offense. Reggie Wayne and Coby Fleener combined to have 15 receptions for 217 yards. Led by Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have far more offensive weapons. In 2011, the Bears' defense was overwhelmed by the Packers' depth at wide receiver. They've never had an answer for Jermichael Finley. Charles Tillman was also injured in Week 1.
The Bears' offense is better-equipped to take advantage of the Packers' secondary. However, the Packers have an opportunistic defense. Cutler will probably give them at least one freebie. Clay Matthews or Nick Perry could also take advantage of the offensive tackles.
Divisional games can go either way. The 2012 NFL Kickoff Game is proof of that. As a Packers enthusiast, I'm very concerned with the "They didn't beat us; we beat ourselves" mentality that is used after every loss. The Packers need more from their defense because the offense hasn't discovered their rhythm. I'm also concerned about Cedric Benson. Lovie Smith has always coached his teams to strip the football.
My head says Packers. My gut says Bears. Had I gone with my gut last week, I would've been right. I hope it's wrong this week…
